Guide to obtaining the death certificate

Guide to obtaining the death certificate

Instructions for quickly requesting a death certificate

The death certificate is an official document issued by the Civil Registry Office of the Municipality where the death occurred and contains all the key information reported in the death certificate, such as date, place, and time of death and any notes relating to the deceased's marital status (e.g., marriage or divorce).

Without the death certificate, it is not possible to complete some fundamental inheritance and administrative procedures, such as the declaration of succession, the land registry transfer, or the closure of the deceased's banking and insurance accounts. To find out the differences between a death certificate, death extract, and death certificate, read this article.

Here is the guide to requesting a death extract online through the Agenzia delle Successioni.

The Agenzia delle Successioni takes care of obtaining the necessary documentation for the inheritance procedure on behalf of the heirs. You can delegate the Agency to obtain one or more documents from those required to initiate a declaration of succession.

The main advantages are:

  • No time wasted at municipal offices
  • Financial savings
  • Easy and stress-free process

Who issues the death certificate extract?

The death certificate is issued by the municipality of death or the municipality of residence of the deceased.

The Agenzia delle Successioni can request the death certificate on behalf of the heirs in the all municipalities in Italy.

Who can request the death certificate extract?

The death certificate extract can be requested, in general, by anyone who needs it to prove the death of a person.

It is not only relatives who can request it, but anyone who knows the deceased's personal details and who have an interest in proving the death (for example, for inheritance procedures, requests for bereavement leave, etc.).

In addition to the death certificate, the Agenzia delle Successioni can request on your behalf certificates, records, deeds, and documents useful for the inheritance declaration.
